3、niversityiiiiiiFlowandHeatTransferCharacteristicinHighPorosityMetalfoamsABSTRACTInthisstudy,flowandheattransfercharacteristicsinhighporositymetalfoamswereexaminedtheoretically,numericallyandexperimentally.Highporositymetalfoamsarepromisingmaterialstobeusedforahighe

4、fficiencyheatexchanger.TheoreticalandNumericalapproachesweredevelopedbasedontheDarcy-BrinkmanequationandForchheimer-Darcyequation,respectivelywithamodifiedenergyequationtopredictvelocityandtemperatureprofilesinarectangularchannelfilledwithmetalfoams.Toexamineeffect

5、ofthicknessofmetalfoamfibre,metalfoamwasassumedWeaire-PhelanstructureandNavier-Stokesequationwasemployedforcomputationalfluiddynamics.TheForchheimer-Darcymodificationwasemployedwiththeexperimentalresultstodetermineflowcharacteristics,thepermeabilityandtheinertialco

6、efficient.Nusseltnumberwasderivedfromavolumetricheattransfercoefficientbasedonthelocalwallandfluidtemperatures.Tovalidatethenumericalprediction,anexperimentalstudywascarriedouttoinvestigateflowandheattransfercharacteristicsinmetalfoams.Forthisstudy,thetestsectionch

7、annelsivwerefilledwithseveralmetalfoamsamples(copperandnickel)withdifferentporeperinch(ppi)andairwasusedasacoolantfluid.Temperaturedistributionandpressuredropalongthetestsectionweremeasuredforarangeofcoolantflowrates.Thevelocityprofilebecomesmoreflatwithincreasingp
