5、lartoincidentsinthestoriesofTheseusandRomulus.IthenstudiedthestoriesofanumberofotherGreektra-ditionalheroes,andfoundthatwhenthesestoriesweredividedintoseparateincidentstherewerecertaintypesofincidentswhichranthroughall,ormost,ofthestories.Whetherthesep
6、arallelshaveanysignificance,orwhethertheyaremerelyaccidentalcoincidences,orthekindofthingsthatmighthappentoanyhero,isaquestiontowhichweshallcomelater.Myfirsttaskistoshowthattheseparallelsexist,andforthatpurposeitisnecessarytotabu-lateandnumberthem.What
7、Ihavedoneistotakeadozenheroeswhosestoriesarenarratedinsufficientdetail,totabulatetheincidentsintheircareers,andtotakeastypicalthoseincidentswhichoccurinthemajorityofthestories.Someoftheseincidentsaremiraculous,whileothersmightseeminsignificant,butevery
