4、ndrigidwhileothersareweakandflexible.Adhesivesusedforstructuralbondingarealwayscuredateitherroomorelevatedtemperaturesandmustpossessadequatestrengthtotransfertheloadsthroughthejoint.Therearemanytypesofstruc-turaladhesives;however,epoxies,nitrilephenolics,andbi

5、smaleimidesarethemostprevalent.Inadditiontofabricatinglargebondedcomponents,adhesivebondingisfrequentlyusedforrepairingdamagedstructuralparts.Bondedjointsmaybepreferredifthincompositesectionsaretobejoinedwherebearingstressesinboltedjointswouldbeunacceptablyhig

6、h,orwhentheweightpenaltyformechanicalfastenersistoohigh.Ingeneral,thinstructureswithwell-definedloadpathsaregoodcandidatesforadhesivebonding,whilethickerstructureswithcomplexloadpathsarebettercandidatesformechanicalfastening.18.1AdvantagesofAdhesiveBondingThea
