2、eticbias,ACmagneticfieldamplitudeandfrequencyonthecharacteristicsofhysteresisloopsproducedinamagnetostrictivetransducer.ThestudyusesamagnetostrictivetransducerdesignedatIowaStateUniversitythatutilizesan11.5cm(4.54in)longby1.27cm(0.5in.)diametercylindricalTerfenol-Drod.Th
3、istransducerallowscontrolledvariationofthefollowingoperatingconditions:mechanicalprestress,magnitudeandfrequencyofACmagneticfield,andmagneticbias.Byperformingextensiveexperimentaltests,materialpropertytrendscanbedevelopedforuseintheoptimizationoftransducerdesignparameter
4、sfordifferentapplications.Fortheresultspresented,themagneticbias,theACmagneticfieldamplitude,andthefrequencyofexcitationwereindependentlyvariedwhiletemperature,massloadandprestresswerekeptconstant.Theminorhysteresisloopsofthestrainversusappliedmagneticfield,fluxdensityve

6、s,hysteresisloops1.INTRODUCTIONANDBACKGROUNDTerfenol-D(Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.9)isahighlymagnetostrictivematerialdevelopedinthe1950’sattheNavalOrdinanceLabs(nowcalledNSWC).ItisanalloyofTerbium,Iron,andDysprosiumthatcanachievestrainsontheorderof1000x10^-6m/mwhenexposedtoamagneticf
7、ieldundercertainconditions.Thismaterialistheactiveelementinmanymagnetostrictivetransducersthatarebeingdeveloped,tested,andmanufacturedatthepresent.OneoftheobstaclesthatwasfoundinthedesignofthesemagnetostrictivetransducersisthatthebehavioroftheTerfenol-Drodishighlydepende
