1、15May2008EXPANDEDCOMPETENCIESFORTHENUCLEARMEDICINEADVANCEDASSOCIATE(NMAA)INTRODUCTIONTheSNMTS(formerlytheSocietyofNuclearMedicineTechnologistSection)publishedthefirstdraftofexpectedcompetenciesfortheNuclearMedicineAdvancedPractitioner(NMAA)inMarch2007(1).Thesecompetencieswerebasedone

2、xistingscopesofpractice,knowledgebase,andtheclinicalskillsexpectedofotherlateralmiddle-levelproviders,primarilyPhysicianAssistants(PA),RadiologistAssistants(RA),andNursePractitioners(NP).Resultsfromthe2005SNMTSphysiciansurvey(2)werealsousedtoguidethedevelopmentofpracticeareasfortheNM

3、AA(3-5).Thefirstdocumentfocusedonthedesiredclinicalandadministrativeskillsets.Itwasassumedthatbecausetheseprogramswouldbeofferedatthegraduatelevel,courseworkinresearchmethods,ethicalandprofessionalissues,andhealthcaresystemsissueswouldbeincludedinaninstitution’scurriculumandsowerepur

4、posefullyomittedfromthedocument.Uponfurtherconsideration,theAdvancedPracticeTaskForcedecidedtoexpandtheoriginalcompetencylistandexplicitlyoutlinealltheknowledge,skills,andattitudesthatshouldbedemonstratedbyanadvancedpracticeprofessional.Thisdecisionwaspromptedbyanextensiveliteratures

5、earchoncurriculumdevelopmentforgraduateleveleducationinthehealthprofessionswiththeintentiontomorefullyaligntheNMAAcompetencieswithcomplementaryactionsandperspectivesofotherparticipantsinthemedicalfield.Thegeneralconceptsincludedinthecompetencydomainsoutlinedinthisdocumenthavebeenembr

6、acedbyabroadspectrumofhealthandmedicaleducationprogramsthroughouttheUSandEurope.TheyaresimilartoeducationmodelspromotedbytheAccreditationCouncilofGraduateMedicalEducation(ACGME)’s“OutcomesProject”(6).Thisprojectresultedintheestablishmentofbaselinestandardsandcompetenciesformedicalres

7、identstomeettheneedsofthemodernhealthcaresystem,farsurpassingthemoretraditionalrolesofdispensingpatientcareandmedicalknowledge.Additionally,ProjectProfessionalism,publishedbytheAmericanBoardofInternalMedicine,servesasaguideforaltruisticandcommunicationcharacteristicsthatarealsoimport
