2、earlyyearsofRenaissance,artistsportrayedsubjectsfromGreekmythologyalongsidemoreconventionalChristianthemes.BotticelliAlessandrodiMarianodiVanniFilipepi,betterknownasSandroBotticelliorIlBotticello("TheLittleBarrel";March1,1445–May17,1510)wasanItalianpainteroftheFlorentine

3、schoolduringtheEarlyRenaissance(Quattrocento).Lessthanahundredyearslater,thismovement,underthepatronageofLorenzode'Medici,wascharacterizedbyGiorgioVasariasa"goldenage",athought,suitablyenough,heexpressedattheheadofhisVitaofBotticelli.Hisposthumousreputationsuffereduntilt

4、helate19thcentury;sincethenhisworkhasbeenseentorepresentthelineargraceofEarlyRenaissancepainting,andTheBirthofVenusandPrimaveraranknowamongthemostfamiliarmasterpiecesofFlorentineart.TheBirthofVenusItdepictsthegoddessVenus,havingemergedfromtheseaasafullgrownwoman,arriving

5、atthesea-shorePallasandtheCentaurThepainting'sbarelandscapefocusesone'sgazeonthetwofigures.Acentaurhastrespassedonforbiddenterritory.Thislustybeing,halfhorseandhalfman,isbeingbroughtundercontrolbyaguard-nympharmedwithashieldandhalberd,andshehasgrabbedhimbythehair.Thewoma

6、nhasbeenidentifiedbothasthegoddessPallasAthenaandtheAmazonCamilla,chasteheroineofVirgil'sAeneid.Whatisundisputedisthemoralcontentofthepainting,inwhichvirtueisvictoriousoversensualitythroughtheuseofreason.Thetwopartsofthehumansoul,reasonandinstinctfightingoneanother,arere
