3、sential.Infact,theproductionofmaterialswithuniqueproperties,determinedbydopingpreciselywithimpuritiesontheonehandorbyinsuringtheabsenceofotherdetrimentalones,continuestobeakeytotechnologicaladvancement.Themostrecentcriticalneedintheindustryforpurematerialsandultratraceanalysisresultedfr

4、omtheinitiationofappliedresearchanddevelopmentofopticalwave—guidesystems,wheretolerancelimitsforwaveguidematerialswereprojectedtobeinthe2to100ng/grangeforcommonlyfoundtransitionmetalimpuritiesFe,Co,Cr,Cu,Mn,Ni,andV.Applicationsofneutronactivation,X—rayfluorescence,atomicabsorption,andla

5、serintracavityabsorptionspectro—scopyinsupportofopticalwaveguideprogramswillbediscussed.Exampleswillbeprovidedtodemonstratetheuseofthesetechniquesforscreeningcommerciallyavailableglass—makingrawmaterialsandchemicalvapordepositionreagents,forunequivocallyidentifyingimpuritiesinglassesand

6、fibers,andfordetectingsourcesofcontaminationduringglass—makingandfiberdrawing.Intheabsenceofmaterialsofsufficientpurityfromavailablecommercialsources,specializedpreparationshavebeenperformedundercontrolledexecutionsofsolventextraction,ionexchange,mercurycathodeelectrolysis,andlowtempera
