2、extendingfromthelowerreachesofMacedoniainthesouthupbeyondtheDanubeinthenorth.ThesearetheregionsofthefirstmissionaryworkamongtheSlavsbythemonksCyrilandMethodius,whodevisedinthe9thcenturyADthefirstfull-fledgedwritingsystemtorepresenttheindigenouslanguage.Thedocumentsthatsurviveareprimarily

5、evolved.Rather,OCSisnowthoughttobeadialectofoneofthebranchesoftheSlaviclanguages.WemayimaginethatthecommunitywhichlaterbecameSlavicspeakerswasatsometimeadialectgroupofProto-Indo-European(PIE).WhenthespeechcommunitybecamesufficientlyseparatedfromotherPIEspeakerstoallowforindependentlangua

6、geevolution,overtimetheirdialectdevelopedintowhatwemaytermCommonSlavic(CS)orProto-Slavic(PSl).Subsequentlythesameprocesshappenedagainwhereby,throughthecourseofmigrationandthevyingforpowerofdifferentneighboringandinternalkingdomsorempires,divisionsoftheCommonSlavicspeechcommunitybecameiso
