2、imedomain,systemidentificationhasbeenbasedlargelyondiscrete-timemodelsforalongtimeinthepast,ignoringcertainmeritsofthenativecontinuous-timemodels.Continuous-time-model-basedsystemidentificationtechniqueswereinitiatedinthemiddleofthelastcentury,butwereover-shadowedbytheoverwhelmingdevelopmentsindisc

3、rete-timemethodsforsometime.Thiswasduemainlytothe‘gocompletelydigital’trendthatwasspurredbyparalleldevelopmentsindigitalcomputers.Thefieldofidentificationhasnowmaturedandseveralofthemethodsarenowincorporatedinthecontinuoustimesystemidentification(CONTSID)toolboxforusewithMatlab.Thepaperpresentsapers

4、pectiveofthesetechniquesinaunifiedframework.1IntroductionThesystemidentificationproblem,characterisedbyZadeh[15]intermsofthreeentities:aclassofmodels,aItisessentialtoknowandunderstandanobjectbeforeweclassofinputsignalsandacriterion,isdepictedinFig.1.venturetohandleit.AnobjectformallyreferredtoasaSy

5、stemidentificationwillbesuccessfulandtheresultssystemisknownthroughmodellingandidentificationandusefuliftheproblemiswellposedintermsoftheseentities.canbeunderstoodbyanalysis.ModellingandidentificationTheclassofmodelsshouldbeappropriateandthesetoftechniqueshelpdevelopknowledgeaboutasystem.Theysignals
