4、in Greensboro,NorthCarolina.HechangedthespellingofhismiddlenametoSydneyin1898.HisparentswereDr.AlgernonSidneyPorter(1825–88),aphysician,andMaryJaneVirginiaSwaimPorter(1833–65).TheyweremarriedonApril20,1858.WhenWilliamwasthree,hismotherdiedfrom tuberculosis,andheandhisfathermovedintothehom
