3、themajorityisapoorguidetodeterminingwhatactionstotake.  ThedaysbeforeAmerica’sCivilWar,whenslaverywasprevalent,demonstratethatfollowingmajorityruleoftenfailstorespectpeople’smoralrightsandliberty.Themajorityofwhitepeopleintheearly1800’ssupportedslaverybe

4、causeofthebenefitstheyreceivedfromthesuppressedblacks.Thus,thegovernmentreluctantlyallowedslaverytobelegalinAmerica,despitetheterriblesufferingsoftheslaves.Thedegradedslavesunderwentuncountableterrifyingexperiences-theywerebeaten,separatedfromtheirfamili

5、es,andforcedtotoillaboriouslyinfieldstheirentirelives.Andbecausethegovernmentbelieved“majorityruled”,theslaveslivedinsuchconditionsuntiltheEmancipationProclamationwaswrittenduringthebloodyCivilWar.Hadthegovernmentnotfollowedtheopinionsoftheclamoringwhite

6、s,slaverycouldhavebeenabolishedmuchsooner,andmuchsufferingcouldhavebeenavoided.Thus,inthiscircumstanceoffreedomvs.suppression,theopinionofthemajorityservedasapoorguidetofollowbytheU.S.government.  Furthermore,theeffectsofmajorityruleimpactAmericanstoday,

7、fortherearemanyunsolved,controversialissuessuchasabortion,stem-cellresearch,andhomosexualmarriages.Inthecaseof“gayrights”,themajorityofAmericansopposepeopleofthesamesexmarrying,andmostofthestates’lawsreflectthisopinion.However,ignoringthewishesofgaysandl
