3、lexauthenticdustsamplesthatincludeIowaloessandSaharansand.Spectralsimulationsforsingle-componentsamples,derivedfromRayleigh-theorymodelsforcharacteristicparticleshapes,betterreproducetheexperimentalspectraincludingthepeakpositionandbandshapecomparedtoMiet

4、heory.ThemineralogyoftheauthenticdustsampleswasinferredusinganalysisofFTIRspectra.Thisapproachallowsforanalysisofthemineralogyofcomplexmulticomponentdustsamples.Extinctionspectrafortheauthenticdustsamplesweresimulatedfromthederivedsamplemineralogyusingpub

5、lishedopticalconstantdatafortheindividualmineralconstituentsandassuminganexternalmixture.Nonsphericalparticleshapeeffectswerealsoincludedinthesimulationsandwereshowntohaveasignificanteffectontheresults.Theresultsshowthatthepositionofthepeakandtheshapeofth

6、ebandoftheIRcharacteristicfeaturesinthe1800to1400cmspectralrangearenotwellsimulatedbyMietheory.Theresonance1peaksareconsistentlyshiftedbymorethan+40cmrelativetotheexperimentalspectrumintheMiesimulation.Rayleighmodelsolutionsfordifferentparticleshapesbet
