4、stosearchforanunknownsoutherncontinent.Asastronomywasoneofthemostimportantbranchesofscience,itwastheBritishgovernmentthatpaidforalltheequipmentandexpensesforthatoftheexpedition.Sincethegovernmentwouldnotpayforsuchanewfieldofscienceasbotany,JosephBanks,attheageof25,hadtosupp
5、lyabout￡10,000ofhisownmoneytoequiptheexpedition.Ontheirthree-yearvoyage,JosephBanksdidnotonlystudyanddescribenewplantshefound,butalsolookedoutneweconomicspecies:plansthatcouldbegrowninEnglandorotherpartsoftheworldtoproducecropsthatcouldbesold.Bankswasthefirsttomovecropsfrom
6、onecontinenttoanotheronalargescale,helpingtodeveloplocaleconomieswiththesenewimports.Someplantsthatwerespreadovertheglobeinthiswayincludecocoa,hempandtea.TheEndeavour,returnedtoEnglandin1771.Thevoyagehadbeenagreatsuccess.Wonderfuldiscoverieshadbeenmadeofstrangenewlands,cult
7、ures,animalsandplants.AfterthatCaptainCookmadetwomorevoyagesaroundtheworld,butJosephBanksneverundertookanother.Frombehindhisdesk,however,hewasinvolvedinenterprisessuchastheexplorationofAfricaandthesettlementofAustralia.In1778,BankswaselectedpresidentoftheRoyalSociety,aposit
