2、iousnesswasforceduponthem,thatChinaasshehadbeeninthepastwasnotabletomeetthedangerousandaggressivemodernityoftheWest.Idonotmeanthepoliticalmodernitysomuchasthemarchofeconomic,educationalandmilitaryevents.TheseChinesefathers,fathersofthepresentgenerationinChina,weretherealrevolution
3、ists.Theyforcedoutofexistencetheolddynasticrule,theychangedwithincrediblespeedthesystemofeducation,withindefatigablezealtheyplannedandsetupaschemeofmoderngovernment.Noancientgovernmentunderanemperoreveraccomplishedwithmoreimperialspeedsuchtremendouschangesinsogreatacountry.Inthisa
4、tmosphereofchange,thepresentintellectualyouthofChinahasgrownup.WherethefathersimbibedthedoctrineofConfuciusandlearnedtheclassicsandrevoltedagainstthem,theseyoungpeoplehavebeenbatteredbymanyforcesofthenewtimes.Theyhavebeentaughtsomethingofscience,somethingofChristianity,somethingof
5、atheism,somethingoffreelove,somethingofcommunism,somethingofWesternphilosophy,somethingofmodernmilitarism,something,infact,ofeverything.Inthemidstofthesturdymedievalismofthemassesoftheircountrymentheyoungintellectualshavebeentaughtthemostextremeofeveryculture.Intellectuallytheyhav
6、ebeenforcedtothesamegreatomissionsthatChinahasmadephysically.Theyhaveskipped,figurativelyspeaking,fromtheperiodoftheunimprovedcountryroadtotheaeroplaneera.Theomissionwastoogreat.Themindcouldnotcompensateforit.Thespiritwaslostintheconflict.Thefirstresult,therefore,ofthehiatuswasund
7、oubtedlytoproduceaclassofyoungChinese,bothmenandwomen,butchieflymen,whofranklydidnotknowhowtoliveintheirowncountryorintheageinwhichtheircountrystillwas.Theywereforthemostparteducatedabroad,wheretheyforgottherealitiesoftheirownrace.Itwaseasyenoughforvariousrevolutionaryleaderstoper
