2、ityFordecades,scholarshavearguedthateducationcausesgreatersupportforcivillibertiesbyincreasingstudentsexposuretopoliticalknowledgeandconstitutionalnorms,suchasdueprocessandfreedomofexpression.Supportforthisclaimcomesexclusivelyfromobservationalevidence,principallyfromcross-sec

3、tionalsurveys.Thispaperpresentsthefirstlarge-scaleexperimentaltestofthisproposition.Morethan1000studentsin59highschoolclassroomswererandomlyassignedtoanenhancedcivicscurriculumdesignedtopromoteawarenessandunderstandingofconstitutionalrightsandcivilliberties.Theresultsshowthatst

4、udentsintheenhancedcurriculumclassesdisplayedsignificantlymoreknowledgeinthisdomainthanstudentsinconventionalcivicsclasses.However,wefindnocorrespondingchangeinthetreatmentgroupssupportforcivilliberties,afindingthatcallsintoquestionthehypothesisthatknowledgeandattitudesarecausall

5、yconnected.ormorethanahalf-century,researchonincreasetolerance.OneschoolofthoughtattributesFtolerancehasdocumentedthepowerfulcorre-increasedtolerancetothecognitiveskillsdevelopedlationbetweeneducationandsupportforcivilthrougheducation(BoboandLicari1989;Prothroliberties.1Sincet

6、he1955publicationofStouffersandGrigg1960).Proponentsofthisview,suchasCommunism,Conformity,andCivilLiberties,thisNie,Junn,andStehlik-Barry,arguethatformaltopichasattractedattentionfromresearchersineducationencouragescognitivedevelopmentandmultipledisciplinesandhasinfluencedbotht
