3、eenpegonnedbyphotolyticdissociationofferrocenevapourbyapulsedArFexcimerlaseratI93nm.Theprocesswascarriedoutatatmosphericpressure,eitherinaninertatmosphereofargonorinareactivegasmixtureofargonandoxygen.Differentialmobilityanalysers,DIVA’S,wereusedforthedeterminationofthepa

4、rticlesizes.Bychanginglaserparameterssuchasbeamsize,pulseenergyandrepetitionrate,particlesizesrangingfrom3to100nm,weregenerated.Morphologyandsizeofthenanoparticleswerestudiedviatransmissionelectronmicroscopy,TEM,andstructuralinformationwasobtainedfromelectrondijkction.Che

5、micalcompositionwasdeterminedthroughX-rayphotoelectronspectroscopy,XPS,andenergydispersiveX-rayspectroscopy,EDX.01999ActaMetallurgicaInc.INTRODUCTIONManyapproachesexistforthesynthesisofnanoparticles(l-3).Thedisadvantagewithmanyofthemistheirhighprocesstemperature,whichgive

6、sanincreasednumberofagglomeratedparticles.Toreducethenumberofagglomerates,alowerreactortemperatureisrequiredand/oralowerprimaryparticleconcentration.Ontheotherhand,bymaintainingalowparticleconcentration,onlyalimitedamountofnanoparticlescanbeproduced.Twotechniques,oneforge

7、neratingnanoparticlesandonefordeterminationofparticlesize,havebeencombinedinthispaper.Nanoparticlesweresynthesisedthroughthelaser-assistedphotolyticdissociationofferrocene,Fe(&H&.Themultiphotondissociationandionisationofferroceneintheuv/visrangehavebeenstudiedelsewhere(4,
