3、onasanapprentice.HardylatermovedtoLondontoworkforprominentarchitectArthurBlomfield.Hebeganwriting,buthispoemswererejectedbyanumberofpublishers.AlthoughheenjoyedlifeinLondon,Hardy'shealthwaspoor,andhewasforcedtoreturntoDorset.In1870HardywassenttoplanachurchrestorationatSt.JuliotinCo
4、rnwall.TherehemetEmmaGifford,sister-in-lawofthevicarofSt.Juliot.Sheencouragedhiminhiswriting,andtheyweremarriedin1874.Hardypublishedhisfirstnovel,DesperateRemediesin1871,touniversaldisinterest.ButthefollowingyearUndertheGreenwoodTreebroughtHardypopularacclaimforthefirsttime.Aswithm
5、ostofhisfictionalworks,GreenwoodTreeincorporatedrealplacesaroundDorsetintotheplot,includingthevillageschoolofHigherBockhamptonthatHardyhadfirstattendedasachild.ThesuccessofGreenwoodTreebroughtHardyacommissiontowriteaserializednovel,APairofBlueEyes,forTinsley'sMagazine.OncemoreHardy
6、drewuponreallife,andthenovelmirrorshisowncourtshipofEmma.HardyfollowedthiswithFarFromtheMaddingCrowd,setinPuddletown(renamedWeatherby),nearhisbirthplace.ThisnovelfinallynettedHardythesuccessthatenabledhimtogiveuphisarchitecturalpracticeandconcentratesolelyonwriting.TheHardyslivedin
