2、erprocurementtooneperyearinFY2007-FY2011andacceleratesprocurementofthefirstCG(X)cruisertoFY2011.TheNavyestimatesthatthefirstandsecondDD(X)swouldcostmorethan$3billioneachtoprocureandthatsubsequentDD(X)swouldcost$2.2billionto$2.6billioneachtoprocure.Theseestimatesaresubstantiallyhigherthanla
3、styear’sestimates.TheDD(X)/CG(X)programposesseveralissuesforCongress,includingissuesrelatedtotheprogram’saffordability,cost-effectiveness,andacquisitionstrategy.ForalongerdiscussionoftheDD(X)andCG(X),seeCRSReport1RL32109.Thisreportwillbeupdatedaseventswarrant.BackgroundTheDD(X)destroyerand
4、CG(X)cruiserprogramswereannouncedbytheNavyinNovember2001aspartofaproposednewfamilyofsurfacecombatantsthatisalsoto2includethesmallLittoralCombatShip(LCS).TheDD(X)wouldhaveafull-loaddisplacementofabout14,000tons,whichwouldmakeitroughly50%largerthantheNavy’scurrent9,000-tonAegiscruisersanddes
5、troyers,andlargerthananyNavydestroyerorcruisersincethenuclear-poweredcruiserLongBeach(CGN-9),whichwasprocuredinFY1957.TheDD(X)istobeamultimissionshipwithanemphasisonnavalsurfacefiresupport(NSFS).Itwouldincorporateseveralnewsurfacecombatanttechnologies,andwouldbeequippedwithtwo155-mm(6.1-in
6、ch)AdvancedGunSystems(AGSs)and80missiletubesforTomahawkcruisemissilesandotherweapons.Itwouldhaveacrewof125to175persons,comparedtomorethan300oncurrentNavydestroyersandcruisers.Inlargepartduetoitsreducedcrewsize,theDD(X)istocostsubstantiallylesstooperateandsupportthantheNavy’scurrentcruisers
