2、le,examinerProf.Dr.JanM.Rabaey,co-examiner2005AbstractTherecentriseandwidespreadadoptionofwirelessnetworkingtechnologiesformobilecommunicationapplicationshassparkednumerousvisionsofanevermorenetworkedandinteractiveworld.Onesuchvisionproposedinthelateninetiesarewirelesssensornetworks,wherewireles

3、scommunicationandcomputingelementsarecombinedwithin-tegratedsensorstoenabletightlycoupledinteractionwiththephysicalworld.Asanewapplicationdomainforwirelesstechnology,keychallengeshereare(i)thelimitedresourcesofthehighlyintegratednodesthataretobeleveragedbytheamountofdevicesdeployedandthecollabor

4、ationbetweenthem,(ii)thetightcouplingofapplication,nodesandtheenvironmentand(iii)thebroadusageprofilebysystems-expertsandnon-expertusersalike.Firstmedium-scaleexperimentsandfield-trialshavereportedthatitisincreasinglyhardtodesign,develop,deploy,testandvalidatesystemsconsistingofmorethanahand-fullo

5、fnodes,especiallywhensituatedinareal-worldenvironment.Prototypicalapplicationsarescarce,seldomlyconsistingofmorethanafewtenstoahundrednodes.Settinguplarge,heterogeneous,interactiveandfunctionalsystemsasforecastinthevisionsisnosmalltask;currentlymoreanartthanasystematicengineeringeffort.Coordinate

6、dmethodsandtoolsforthedesignanddeploymentofwirelessnetworkedembeddedsystemsaremissingtoday.Withthiswork,wetocontributetothedesignanddevelopmentofwirelessnetworkedembeddedsystems.Thespecificcontributionsarepresentedanddiscussedinthecontextofaverticalsliceofthedesignspaceconcernedandtherelevantques
