3、rheaincidencefellamong15{19year-oldsinearly-repealstates15{19yearsafterlegalization.Thee ectsaremostpronouncedandpreciselyestimatedforBlackwomen.Thebasic ndingsholdupundertriple-di erencingwithanuntreatedoldercohortthatwasnotinuteroduringabortionrepeal.1IntroductionSocialscientistshaveconvincin
4、glydocumentedthee ectofabortionlegalizationonarangeoffertilityoutcomes,includingbirthrates,pregnancies,abortionutilizationandcontraceptionuse(Levine2004).Morerecently,however,attentionhasshiftedtonon-fertilityoutcomes.ThemostprominentexampleofthisshiftisDonohueandLevitt(2001)(DL01),whichlinksab
5、ortionlegalizationintheearly1970stothedeclineincrimeinthe1990s.Theirargumentissimple:abortionreducesunwantedbirthsandunwantedchildrenaremorelikelytoengageincriminalactivity.AssummarizedbyLevitt(2004),theevidencesuggeststhatabortionaccountsforabout10percentofthedropinhomicide,violentcrimeandprop
6、ertycrimebetween1991and2001.TheDL01evidencehasbeendisputed,mostnotablybyJoyce(2004,2009)andFooteandGoetz(2008).DonohueandLevitt(2004,2008)claiminresponsethatappropriaterevisionsoftheiroriginalstudypreservethequalitative ndings,albeitatsmallermagni-tudes.Thelackofrobustnessintheevidencesurroundi
