2、ke)wascommodifiedinthe1980s.Sincethattime,ithasbeenexportedinlargequantitiestoJapan.ThesaleofmatsutakenowcontributesmoretotheincomeofShangri-laCounty(DiqingAutonomousTibetanPrefec-ture)thananyothercrop,includingtimberandlivestock.Duringthe1980sand1990s,villagersinthisremoter
3、egionusedtheirmushroomearningstobuildspacious,beautifulnewhousesinthetraditionallocal(Kham)style,andinsomecasestobuymotorvehiclesoropenbusinesses.Invillageswithaccesstoproductivematsutakehabitat,virtuallyeveryhouseholdwasabletobuildanewhouse;entirevillagesweretransformed.Du
4、ringthe1990s,severalvillagesdevelopedlocallybasedmanagementregimestoenhanceproductionandtoaddresstheproblemsandconflictsthatarosefromtheharvestofsuchavaluableproduct.Morerecently,governmentagenciesandNGOshaveplayedahighlyvisibleroleinpromoting“sustainable”harvestpolicies.The
