1、ARTIFICIALWINDGENERATIONANDSTRUCTURALRESPONSEByAttiliolannuzzi1andPaoloSpinelli2ABSTRACT:Withmoderncomputationalmeans,theuseofdeterministicmethodstopredicttheaerodynamicbehaviorofstructuresisbecominganattractivealternativetofrequencydomainmethods.Windspeedsamplescanbegeneratedbyvar

2、ioustechniquesandfedintothesystem'sequationsofmotion.Theuseofdeterministicapproaches,however,requirestheartificialwindtoberealisticandthesimulationtechniqueefficient.Astudyisundertakentoinvestigatethemeritsanddrawbacksofcommonlyusedsimulationtechniques.Thelattercanbedividedintotwoc

3、lasses,i.e.,wavesuperpositionmethodsandmethodsbasedonlinearfiltering.Techniquesforsimulatingsingleandmultipletimeseriesarereviewed.Artificialwindspeedisgenerated,andtherespectiveresponsescalculated.Theeffectsontheresponseofthesimulatedsamples'differentstatisticalpropertiesareinvest

4、igated.Re•sultsshowthatdynamicresponseisaffectedbytheintrinsiccharacter•isticsofsimulatedfluctuationsandtheirdegreeofcorrelation.Linearfiltersarecomputationallymoreadvantageousand,ingeneral,leadtolargerresponseparameterscomparedwithwavesuperpositionmethods.Theuseofautoregressive-ty

5、pesimulationmethodsisrecommended.INTRODUCTIONWithprogressincomputationalfacilities,anincreasingnumberofphenomenainvolvedinthedesignofcivilengineeringstructuresmayberepresentedinamorerealisticandcomplexfashion.Inparticular,manyproblemsinvolvedphysicalquantitiesthatcanonlybedennedina

6、statisticalsense.Thegenerationofartificialsamples,havingimposedstatisticalproperties,isoftentheeasiestandmostgeneralwaytotacklethespecificproblemunderconsideration.Theartificialdataarefedintothegoverningequationsfortheproblemandthelattercanbesolved.Anumberofmethodsforsimulatingstat

7、ionaryrandomfields,withspecifiedspectraldensity,havebeenproposedsofar.Thestimulationmethodsmoregenerallyusedcanbedividedintotwoclasses:(1)Methodsbasedontheuseofseriesofsineand/orcosinefunctions(wavesuperpo•sition);and(2)methodsbasedontheapplicationoflinearniterstosequencesofrandomn
