1、PrefaceInthelatespringof1998,aconferencewasheldinthewonderfulandrustictownofBanff,Alberta,situateddeepintheheartlandoftheCanadianRockies.There,overthecourseofthreedaysandtwonights,cognitiveneuroscientistsgatheredtodiscussandargueaboutissuesthatconcerned
2、thefunctionalneuroimagingofcognitiveprocesses.Agreatdealofdatawaspresented,andaplethoraofviewswereadvanced.Attimes,peoplewereconvincedbythedataandinterpretationsbeingputforward,butjustasoften,peoplewereskeptical.So,thediscussionsandargumentswouldbeginag
3、ain.Allinall,itwastremendousfun,andaverystimulatingweekend!Now,typicallythatwouldbetheendofthestory.Usually,whenaintensemeetingcomestoaclose,theparticipantsbrushthemselvesoff,pickuptheirthings,andheadoffforhome;moretiredthanwhentheyfirstarrived,and,hopef
4、ully,alittlewiseraswell.Butthisconferencewouldprovetobeverydifferent.Thediscussionsandargu-mentshadhighlightedtoallthattherewasaveryrealneedtoputtogetherabookonthefunctionalneuroimagingofcognition.Thisbookwouldhavetodoatleasttwothings.Itwouldhavetoprovi
5、deahistoricalperspectiveontheissuesandimagingresultsinanumberofdifferentcognitivedomains.Andforeachdomain,itwouldhavetoarticulatewherethingsstoodcurrently,andwheretheymightbeheading.Thatisthegoalofthepresenthandbook.Thehandbookwaswrittenwithtwotypesofre
6、adersinmind:thosewhoarerela-tivelynewtofunctionalneuroimagingand/orcognitiveneuroscience,andthosewhoareseekingtoexpandtheirunderstandingofcognitiveandbrainsystems.Itisourhope,andintention,thatthisuniquecombinationofdepthandbreadthwillrenderthebooksuitab
7、leforboththestudentandtheestablishedscientistalike.Withabal-ancedblendoftheoreticalandempiricalmaterial,thehandbookshouldserveasanessentialresourceonthefunctionalneuroimagingofcognitiveprocesses,andonthelatestdiscoveriesobtainedthroughpositronemissionto
8、mography(PET)andfunc-tionalmagneticresonanceimaging(fMRI).Indeed,inrecentyearsthefieldoffunc-tionalneuroimagingofcognitionhasliterallyexploded.Fromlessthanadozenpapersin1994,thenumberofpublicationsinthisareaincreasedtoabout70in199
