3、iderHaggardin1925,ismadeclearintheprecedingpagesofStiebel'sbook,thefirsttoconcentratesolelyonHaggard'streatmentoflandscapeinhisAfricanromances.Stiebel'scentralthesisinthisbookishowHaggard,aspopularnovelist,createdageneric'Africantopography'which,becauseitbecameformulaic,becameinstantlyrecognisab
4、leforhisreadingpublicbothinthelatenineteenthandtwentiethcenturies.ThebookshowshowHaggardprojectedhiscontradictoryimperialistimpulses,hisintenseandfearfulsexualdesires,hismisgivingsonsomeofthecentralissuesofhisage,suchascivilisationandbarbarism,andculturalrelativityontotheAfricanlandhefirstencoun
5、teredasayoungmaninNatal.Thoughrelativelybrief,Haggard'syouthfulexperienceofsouthernAfrica'speoplesanditslandscapefuelledaliteraryoutputthathad,andcontinuestohave,greatpopularappeal.HaggardcametoSouthAfricafromEnglandin1875attheimpressionableageofnineteen,atfirstservingonthestaffofSirHenryBulwer,
