2、encethistimewithoutknowingwhichtime,wherethattimetakeshold,andforwhomacertainconsensusemergesontheissueofwhattimethisis.Soifitisnotjustamatterofdifferencesofinterpretationaboutwhattimeitis,thenitwouldseemthatwehavealreadymorethanonetimeatworkinthistime,andthattheproblemoftimewil
3、lafflictanyeffortImightmaketotryandconsidersomeofthesemajorissuesnow.Itmightseemoddtobeginwithareflectionontimewhenoneistryingtospeakaboutsexualpoliticsandculturalpoliticsmorebroadly.Butmysuggestionhereisthatthewayinwhichdebateswithinsexualpoliticsareframedarealreadyimbuedwiththep
4、roblemoftime,ofprogressinparticular,andincertainnotionsofwhatitmeanstounfoldafutureoffreedomintime.Thatthereisnoonetime,thatthequestionofwhattimethisis,alreadydividesus,hastodowithwhichhistorieshaveturnedouttobeformative,howtheyintersectorfailtointersectwithotherhistoriesandsowi
5、thaquestionofthehowtemporalityisorganizedalongspatiallines.Imnotsuggestingherethatwereturntoaversionofculturaldifferencethatdependsonculturalwholism.Infact,Iopposeanysuchreturn.Theproblemisnotthattherearedifferentculturesatwarwithoneanother,orthattherearedifferentmodalitiesoftim
6、e,eachconceivedasself-sufficient,thatarearticu-latedindifferentanddifferentiatedculturallocationsorthatcomeintocon-fusedorbrutalcontactwithoneanother.Ofcourse,atsomelevel,thatcouldbeavaliddescription,butitwouldmissanimportantpoint,namely,thathegemonicconceptionsofprogressdefinethe
7、mselvesoverandagainstapre-moderntemporalitythattheyproduceforthepurposesoftheirownself-legitimation.Politically,thequestions,whattimearewein?areallofusinthesametime?andspecifically,whohasarrivedinmodernityandwhohasnot?areallraisedinthemidstofveryseriouspoliticalcontestations.Theq
