3、hesetouttoavenge.Paracelsus'revengetooktheformofwithholdinglovefromeveryoneexcepthisfather,for,asfarasisknown,heneverlovedanyoneelse.Afterextensivetravelandstudy,Paracelsusachievedfameasaselftaughtandexcellentphysicianwhooffendedeveryonewithhisarrogance.Towardmiddleagehebecamein

4、terestedinphilosophyandmedicine.AlthoughemotionallyParacelsusremainedagoodCatholic,intellectuallyheembracedapaganphilosophyinfluencedbytheNeoplatonistMarsilioFicino.Todesignatehishighestcosmogonicprinciple,Paracelsuscoinedtheword"Yliaster,"or"Hylaster,"whichmightbetranslatedas"c

5、osmicmatter."Forhim,thespiritualprincipletooksecondplacetocosmicmatter;manandtheworldwerebothseenaspartsofanimatematter.Thuswhilebeingamedievalanimistwhobelievednatureisfullofwitches,incubi,andotherspirits,Paracelsuswasatthesametimeamodemmaterialist.Accordingtohim,everythingcons

6、istsofanimateparticles,orentia,diseasesincluded.Diseases,therefore,arenatural,necessaryconstituentsofliferatherthanhatedandforeignones.ThesourcesofParacelsus'thoughtandworkwerehisownpsyche,whichheprobedindepth,andsuperstitiouspaganbeliefswhichhecollectedextensively.Whileworkingw
