3、claimedhebecameinvolvedwithrowingbecausehewasboredstudyingphysics.StephenthenwentontoCambridgetodoresearchinCosmology.AftergaininghisPh.D.hebecamefirstaResearchFellowandlateronaProfessorialFellowatGonvilleandCaiusCollege.AfterleavingtheInstituteofAstronomyin1
4、973,StephencametotheDepartmentofAppliedMathematicsandTheoreticalPhysics.TheonsetofHawking'sgraduateeducationatCambridgemarkedaturningpointinhislife.Itwasthenthatheembarkedupontheformalstudyofcosmology,whichfocusedhisstudy.Anditwasthenthathewasfirststrickenwit
5、hLouGehrig'sdisease,aweakeningdiseaseofthenervousandmuscularsystemthateventuallyledtohistotalconfinementinawheelchair.Mydreamsatthattimewereratherdisturbed.Beforemyconditionhadbeendiagnosed,Ihadbeenveryboredwithlife.Therehadnotseemedtobeanythingworthdoing.But
6、shortlyafterIcameoutofhospital,IdreamtthatIwasgoingtobeexecuted.IsuddenlyrealisedthattherewerealotofworthwhilethingsIcoulddoifIwerereprieved.Anotherdream,thatIhadseveraltimes,wasthatIwouldsacrificemylifetosaveothers.Afterall,ifIweregoingtodieanyway,itmightasw
7、elldosomegood.ButIdidn'tdie.Infact,althoughtherewasacloudhangingovermyfuture,Ifound,tomysurprise,thatIwasenjoyinglifeinthepresentmorethanbefore.Ibegantomakeprogresswithmyresearch,HawkingmarriedhisfirstwifeJaneWildein1965.Hismarriagewasanimportantstepinhisemot
