3、dgeeconomy’inmanyadvancedindustrialnations,therehasbeenagrowinginterestinregionalinnovationsystemsandtherolethatuniversitiesmightplayinthese.Oneresulthasbeenthedemarcationbygovernmentactorsofspecificspacesforthecreation,transferandtransformationofknowledge.Suchspaceshavebeengivenvariousna
4、mes,suchas‘smartregions’,‘sciencecities’and‘innovationcorridors’.Whilsttheassociatedpolicyrhetorichasmuchincommonwiththeearlierinterestinscienceandtechnologyparkstherearealsocleardis-tinguishingdifferences.Morerecentpolicyinitiativeshavesoughttofosterindustryclusterswithinthesespacestocon
5、tributetoeconomicdevelopmentanddiversificationandlinkthistoeconomic,socialandculturalregeneration.Thispaperexplorespolicy-drivencreationof‘innovationareas’byfocusingontwocontrastingexamples:NewcastleScienceCityintheNorthEastofEnglandandtheGoldCoastPacificInnovationCorridorinQueensland,Aus
