2、sesincludevehicleimpactagainstbridgeandotherstructures,icebergimpactagainstoffshorestructures,andimpactofprojectilesasaresultofexplosionsorfallingobjects,tonameafew.Analyticalmodellingofimpactphenomenapresentsasignificantchallenge.Inadditiontotreatingthecontactconditionsbetweentwo

3、impactingobjectsitisnecessarytoincludehighlynonlinearmaterialmodellingbecauseoftheseverityoftheloadingthatoftenoccurs.Becauseoftheshortdurationoftheload,strainratedependenceoftheresponseshouldalsobeconsidered.ThispaperpresentsabriefreviewoftworesearchprojectsrecentlyconductedatPen

4、nStateUniversitytoinvestigatethecapabilitiesoffiniteelementmodellingtohandleimpactloading.Thefirstprojectdealswiththegeneralcaseofimpactbetweenanexternalbodyandaconcretestructure.Botharetreatedastwo-dimensionalsystemsrepresentedbyplanestressfiniteelements.Thisworkwasmotivatedbyane

5、xperimentalprogramtoassesstheperformanceofbridgebarriersunderimpactloadssimilartovehicleimpact(Scanlonetal.1989).Thesecondprojectinvolvesthemodellingofreinforcingbarsembeddedinconcretetoinvestigatetheeffectsofhigh•rateimpactloadingonbondbetweenconcreteandreinforcement.MODELLINGIMP

6、ACTBETWEENEXTERNALMASSANDCONCRETESTRUCTUREInthisproject,Riad(1991)implementedthegeneralapproachtomodellingofimpactandreleaseconditionsproposedbyHughesetal.(1976).ConsideringthesimpleexampleshowninFigure1involvingamassstrikingaverticalcantilever,theelementnodesaredividedintocontact
