2、inthepastdecade.AccordingtoCohenandLemish(2002),mobilephonesusedtobeanesotericdevice.Today,themobilephoneiscertainlythemostpervasivecommunicativedevicethatpeoplecarry.Themobilephonecanconnectpeople“any-time”,“anywhere”andwith“anybody”,withtheaddedbenefitofmob
3、il-ityandportability.EspeciallyinKorea,mobilephoneusehasproliferatedsincethefirstservicewaslaunched15yearsago.Infact,Korea’smobilephonepenetra-tionhasreachedat66%1(MinistryofInformationandCommunication,2002)andKoreaisoneoftheleadingcountriesintheworldintheare
4、asofmobilephoneuseandtechnology.Withthewidespreadandhighpenetrationofmobilephones,Koreansusethemobilephoneliterallyatanytime,anywhereandwithanybody–fromsubwaystorestrooms.Therapidadoptionofthemobilephonecanbeattributedtomanyfactors,includingincreasedportabili
5、ty,subsidizedsubscriptions,decliningcostsandaddedvalue-addedservices.Noseg-mentofKoreansocietyisexemptfromthemobilephoneculture.Furthermore,mobilephonetechnologyisbecomingmoreadvancedeveryyear,especiallyintheKoreanmarket.Forexample,newmobiletele-phonemodelsar
6、eofferedevery3monthsfromnumerousmanufacturers.Also,mobilephoneusersnowcanwatchmovies,playvideogames,listentomusic,payforgoodsandservicesandsoforth.Hencethemobiletele-phoneis“morethanmeetstheeye”.1Korea’stotalmobilephoneusersareestimatedat32,324,588(about66%of
7、thetotalpopulationofSouthKorea).ThefollowingisthebreakdownofthethreemobiletelecommunicationcarriersinKorea.SKTelecom(SKT)has17,149,621(53%)users,KoreaTelecomFreetel(KTF)has10,496,588(32.3%)usersandLGTelecom(LGT)has4,783,075(14.7%)usersMinistryofInformationand
