4、uireusingdifferentwords.Meanwhilethedifferentstylisticcoloringsofthewordsalsodeterminetheirdifferentapplicablescope.HerewewouldanalyzeObama’sspeechfromtwoaspectsinthelexicallevel.A.WordstructureAccordingtoM.A.K.Halliday’sconceptofregister,wordstructureisseriouslyaffectedbythemodeofdiscourse,theteno
5、rofdiscourse,therelationshipbetweenspeakerandlisteners,thefieldofdiscourseandwhatbeingsaid.Thelengthofawordoftenhasacloserelationshipwiththeformalityofthetext.InEnglish,weoftencallthosewordscontainingsixorabovesixletters,orthreeorabovethreesyllablesasBIGWORD.Generallyanessaycouldshowitsformalitybyu
6、singacertainnumberofbigwords.InObama’sinauguralspeech,thewholetexthas2395wordswhilethenumberofbigwordsis664,whichmakeup27.7%ofthetotal.However,theproportionofbigwordindailylanguageisoftenlessthan20%.Sorelatively,theinaugurationspeechesusedmoreformalwordsandtheirwordstructureismorecomplex.Thisshowsu
