3、enotthoughtitnecessarytoreprintanyofthenumerouspamphletsandarticleswhichhewroteupontheIliadandOdyssey,sincethesewereallmergedin"TheAuthoressoftheOdyssey,"whichgiveshismaturedviewsuponeverythingrelatingtotheHomericpoems.ForasimilarreasonIhavenotincludedanessayontheevidencefortheResurrectionofJesusC
4、hrist,whichheprintedin1865forprivatecirculation,sincehesubsequentlymadeextensiveuseofitin"TheFairHaven."Twooftheessaysinthiscollectionwereoriginallydeliveredaslectures;theremainderwerepublishedinTheUniversalReviewduring1888,1889,and1890.Ishouldperhapsexplainwhytwootheressaysofhis,whichalsoappeared
5、inTheUniversalReview,havebeenomitted.Thefirstofthese,entitled"L'AffaireHolbein-Rippel,"relatestoadrawingofHolbein's"DansedesPaysans,"intheBasleMuseum,whichisusuallydescribedasacopy,butwhichButlerbelievedtobetheworkofHolbeinhimself.Thisessayrequirestobeillustratedinsoelaborateamannerthatitwasimposs
