2、RY,ALBERTASEPTEMBER,2014©AhmadPoursaberi2014AbstractTheproposedresearchcontributestothedevelopmentofbiometricsystemsanditsapplications.Thefacialbiometric,asapartoftheunderlyingtechnology,isafocusofthisthesis.Specifically,itisaimedatdevelopingthenewconcep
3、tsofbiometricssystems,suchassystemswithsituationalawareness,interviewing,andhuman-machineinteractionsupportsystemthatanalyzehumanbehavioralbiometrics.Thesystemsmakeuseoffacialexpressiondata,besidesthetraditionalvisual-spectrumdataforfacerecognition.Anewt
4、echniqueforfacialexpressionrecognition(FER),inparticular,istargetedinthisthesisasoneoftheimportantcomponentsinhumanbehavioranalysis.Combinedwithfacerecognition(FR),itisabasisforamulti-biometricdecisionsupporttool.Mostoftheavailableapproachesfortherecogni
5、tionoffacesandexpressionsonlyconsidereithertheexpression-invariantfacerecognitionorthefacialexpressionrecognitionregardlessofidentity.ThisresearchproposesafacialbiometricanalysisusinganewfacialfeaturedetectionbasedonamodifiedFrangifilter.ThejointFR/FERus
6、esnewfeatureextractiontechniquecalledGauss-Laguerrewavelets,whichprovidesrichanduniquefeaturessuitableforexpressionsclassificationandidentityrecognition.Inaddition,thisstudyconsidersfacialbiometricininfraredspectrum,whichprovidesadditionalinformation(suc
7、hasfaceregiontemperature)whichisrequired,inparticular,atabordercheckpoint.Moreover,recognitionofexpressionsfromvideoisinvestigatedtoshowtheextendibilityoftheproposedtechniqueforvideoprocessingaswell.Keywords:biometrics,facialexpressionrecognition,Gauss-L
