2、ds:Municipalsolidwaste,carbondischarge,carbonmetabolism,urbancarbonflow,urbanecosystemsSUMMARYWithrapidurbandevelopment,municipalsolidwaste(MSW)hasbecomeapressingissue.Estimationofcarbondischargethroughmunicipalsolidwasteprovidesawaytoassessenvironmentalloadofsolidwastefromtheviewpointofthecarbon
3、cycle.Withfewstudiesoncarbonflowinurbanecosystems,thisresearchcontributestourbancarbonresearchandprovidesinsightsintohumanimpactsonthecarboncycle.Basedonacom-prehensivefieldworkinvestigationofatypicalChinesetouristcity–HaikouCity,HainanIsland–thecharacteristicsofMSWcarbondischargeandhumanactiviti
4、esthatinfluenceditwereanalysed.Theresultsindicatedthat,in2001,thetotalcarbondischargefrom261.9GgofMSWwas105.1GgCperyear,and174.6kgCpercapitaperannum.Carbonisdischargedintheformoffoodscraps(24%),plastics(20%),wood(17%),fabrics(14%),paper(13%),anddustandstone(12%).Iflandfillreceivedallthewaste,4.7%
5、ofMSWcarbonwouldbetransformedintomethane,withavalueof4.9GgC.Between1991and1999,Haikou’spercapitaMSWcarbondischargeincreasedby59.9%,andtotalMSWcarbondischargeincreasedby124.9%.MSWcarbondischargeinHaikouissignificantlyaffectedbythegrowthofresidentialexpenditureandurbanisation.Localcharacteristicsof
6、tourismalsoinfluenceHaikou’sMSWcarbondischarge,notonlyintermsofitsyearlyvariation,butalsoitsmonthlyvariation.IntegratingdataoncarbondischargewithcarbonDownloadedby[TongjiUniversity]at19:4414May2012consumptionwillprovideasystematicviewofthecarbonmetabolisminurbaneco-systems,andfurtherinsightsintot
