3、by,Lincolnshire.Hisfather,GeorgeClaytonTennyson,aclergymanandrector,sufferedfromdepressionandwasnotoriouslyabsentminded.AlfredbegantowritepoetryatanearlyageinthestyleofLordByron.Afterspendingfourunhappyyearsinschoolhewastutoredathome.TennysonthenstudiedatTrinityCollege
4、,Cambridge,wherehejoinedtheliteraryclub'TheApostles'andmetArthurHallam,whobecamehisclosestfriend.TennysonpublishedPoems,ChieflyLyrical,in1830,whichincludedthepopular"Mariana".LifeandWorksHisnextbook,Poems(1833),receivedunfavorablereviews,andTennysonceasedtopublishforne
5、arlytenyears.HallamdiedsuddenlyonthesameyearinVienna.ItwasaheavyblowtoTennyson.Hebegantowrite"InMemoriam",anelegyforhislostfriend-theworktookseventeenyears."TheLadyofShalott","TheLotus-eaters""Morted'Arthur"and"Ulysses"appearedin1842inthetwo-volumePoemsandestablishedhi
6、sreputationasawriter.AftermarryingEmilySellwood,thecouplesettledinFarringford,ahouseinFreshwaterontheIsleofWightin1853.Fromtherethefamilymovedin1869toAldworth,Surrey.Duringtheselateryearsheproducedsomeofhisbestpoems.LifeandWorksAmongTennyson'smajorpoeticachievementsist
