1、1.In1892theSierraClubwasformed.In1908anareaofcoastalredwoodtreesnorthofSanFranciscowasestablishedasMuirWoodsNationalMonument.IntheSierraNevadamountains,awalkingtrailfromYosemiteValleytoMountWhitneywasdedicatedin1938.ItiscalledJohnMuirTrail.JohnMuirwasbornin1838inSc

2、otland.Hisfamilynamemeans“moor,”whichisameadowfullofflowersandanimals.Johnlovednaturefromthetimehewassmall.Healsolikedtoclimbrockycliffsandwalls.WhenJohnwaseleven,hisfamilymovedtotheUnitedStatesandsettledinWisconsin.Johnwasgoodwithtoolsandsoonbecameaninventor.Hefir

3、stinventedamodelofasawmill.Laterheinventedanalarmclockthatwouldcausethesleepingpersontobetippedoutofbedwhenthetimersounded.Muirlefthomeatanearlyage.Hetookathousand-milewalksouthtotheGulfofMexicoin1867and1868.ThenhesailedforSanFrancisco.Thecitywastoonoisyandcrowdedf

4、orMuir,soheheadedinlandfortheSierraNevadas.WhenMuirdiscoveredtheYosemiteValleyintheSierraNevadas,itwasasifhehadcomehome.Helovedthemountains,thewildlife,andthetrees.Heclimbedthemountainsandevenclimbedtreesduringthunderstormsinordertogetclosertothewind.Heputforththet

5、heoryinthelate1860'sthattheYosemiteValleyhadbeenformedthroughtheactionofglaciers.Peopleridiculedhim.Notuntil1930wasMuir'stheoryprovencorrect.MuirbegantowritearticlesabouttheYosemiteValleytotellreadersaboutitsbeauty.HiswritingalsowarnedpeoplethatYosemitewasindangerf

6、romtimberminingandsheepranchinginterests.In1901TheodoreRooseveltbecamepresidentoftheUnitedStates.Hewasinterestedinconservation.MuirtookthepresidentthroughYosemite,andRoosevelthelpedgetlegislationpassedtocreateYosemiteNationalParkin1906.AlthoughMuirwonmanyconservati
