5、betweennon-whitesandwhites,andthesanctioningof“white-only”jobs,In1950,thePopulationRegistrationActrequiredthatallSouthAfricansberaciallyclassifiedintooneofthreecategories:white,black(African),orcolored(ofmixeddescent).Nom-compliancewiththeracelawswasdealtwith
6、harshly.Chinesesettlers,mainlylaborers,wereclassifiedascoloreds,whileJapanese,mainlybusinesspeople,wereclassifiedaswhite.Towardtheendofthe1980s,amidincreasingracialtensionandcriticismfromtheoutsideworld,NationalistpresidentF.W.DeKlerkstartedaseriousreform.Her
