4、ffformationsthatmakeitconducivetodifferingeconomiesandlifestyles.Thevariedclimatealongitscoastcontributestodifferingpatternsofliving.Demographically,itisheavilyurbanintheBayareaandSouthernCoastalareas,mixedruralandsemi-urbanalongtheCentralCoast,andmostlyruralalongth
5、eNortherncoast.Inthepast,ithasbeendifficulttofullyappreciatethemagnitudeoftheconnectionstotheocean.Now,itispossibletomeasuretheeconomicanddemographicrelationshipsastheychangeovertimethroughoutthestateasawhole,andinthedifferentcoastalregionsofCalifornia.Between1990an
6、d2000,California’spopulationgrewfrom29.8milliontoapproximately33.9million,anestimatedannualgrowthrateof13.7%.Seventy-sevenpercentofthepopulationlivesinornearthecoast,andafastergrowingpopulationinhabitstheinlandareasimmediatelyadjacenttothecoast.Anotherimportantindic
