2、andSciences(knowncommonlyastheAcademy.)Ostensiblyaprofessionalhonoraryorganizationdedicatedtotheadvancementoftheartsandsciencesofmotionpicturesbutinrealityananti-laborstudio-controlledcompanyuniontoprotectthestudiobosses’muscleagainstrebellioustechniciansandtokeepactorsandactressunioniz

3、ationatbay!HistoryoftheOscarTheAcademywasfoundedonMay11,1927inCalifornia;itcurrentlyhasamembershipofabout6,000professionals(fromtechnicianstodirectors)fromthemovieindustry.MembershavetherighttovotefortheOscarawards.TheawardswerefirstgivenatabanquetattheRooseveltHotelinHollywoodonMay16,1

4、929.Forthenext12yearswinnerresultsweregiventonewspaperssothattheywouldbereadyforpublicationinthelateeditionattheOscarnight.In1940,therewasanearlyleakbytheLAtimessothepublicknewabouttheresultsbeforetheceremony.Asaresultthenowfamousconfidentialenvelopesystemwasintroducedin1941,addingatouc

5、hofsuspensetotheevent!AftertheUSenteredWWIIin1941,theAcademy’sboardofdirectorsdecidedthattheOscarstatuetteswouldbemadeofplasticinordertosavethemetalforthewareffort;theyweretobetradedinforgoldenstatuettesafterthewar.Thepracticeofpresentingtheawardsinabanquetwasdiscontinuedin1943duetothew

6、arandthepresentationceremonieshavesincebeenheldintheaters.In1944theceremonywasbroadcastedbynetworkradioforthefirsttime.In1953theOscarwasfirsttelevised.In1966thetelevisedceremonywentcolor.“Justthink,”saidBobHope“youcanactuallyseethelosersturngreen.”Afterholdingtheceremonyataroundhalfadoz
