3、gether.Hebecomesaninheritorofthefundedcapitalofcivilization.Themostformalandtechnicaleducationintheworldcannotsafelydepartfromthisgeneralprocess.Itcanonlyorganizeitordifferentiateitinsomeparticulardirection.Ibelievethattheonlytrueeducationcomesthroughthestimulationofthechild'spowersbythedemandsoft

4、hesocialsituationsinwhichhefindshimself.Throughthesedemandsheisstimulatedtoactasamemberofaunity,toemergefromhisoriginalnarrownessofactionandfeeling,andtoconceiveofhimselffromthestandpointofthewelfareofthegrouptowhichhebelongs.Throughtheresponseswhichothersmaketohisownactivitieshecomestoknowwhatthe

5、semeaninsocialterms.Thevaluewhichtheyhaveisreflectedbackintothem.Forinstance,throughtheresponsewhichismadetothechild'sinstinctivebabblingsthechildcomestoknowwhatthosebabblingsmean;theyaretransformedintoarticulatelanguageandthusthechildisintroducedintotheconsolidatedwealthofideasandemotionswhichare

6、nowsummedupinlanguage.Ibelievethatthiseducationalprocesshastwosides-onepsychologicalandonesociological;andthatneithercanbesubordinatedtotheotherorneglectedwithoutevilresultsfollowing.Ofthesetwosides,thepsychologicalisthebasis.Thechild'sowninstinctsandpowersfurnishthematerialandgivethestartingpoint
