3、isedtext,illustrations,andnotes.Hehadcompletedthetranslation,withtheexceptionofthelastfourchaptersofthetenthbook,andhaddiscussed,withProfessorWarren,theillustrationsintendedforthefirstsixbooksofthework;thenoteshadnotbeenarrangedorcompleted,thoughmanyofthemwereoutlinedinthemanuscript,o
4、rtheintentiontoinsertthemindicated.Theseveralbooksofthetranslation,sofarasitwascompleted,hadbeenreadtoalittlegroupoffriends,consistingofProfessorsSheldonandKittredge,andmyself,andhadreceivedourcriticism,whichhad,attimes,beenutilizedintherevisionofthework.AfterthedeathofProfessorMorgan
5、,inspiteofmyobviousincompetencyfromatechnicalpointofview,Iundertook,attherequestofhisfamily,tocompletethetranslation,andtoseethebookthroughthepress.Imust,therefore,assumeentireresponsibilityforthetranslationofthetenthbook,beginningwithchapterthirteen,andfurtherresponsibilityfornecessa
6、rychangesmadebymeintheearlierpartofthetranslation,changeswhich,innocase,affectanytheoryheldbyProfessorMorgan,butwhichinvolvemainlytheadoptionofsimplerformsofstatement,orthecorrectionofobviousoversights.ThetextfollowedisthatofValentineRoseinhissecondedition(Leipzig,1899),andthevariatio
7、nsfromthistextare,withafewexceptionswhichareindicatedinthefootnotes,inthenatureofareturntotheconsensusofthemanuscriptreadings.TheillustrationsinthefirstsixbooksarebelievedtobesubstantiallyinaccordwiththewishesofProfessorMorgan.Thesuggestionsforillustrationsinthelaterbookswereincomplet
