3、RCV)strainG95,whichwasisolatedfromnasalswabsofacalfsufferingfromrespiratorydisorders,wasdeterminedandcomparedwiththeSgeneoftheenteropathogenicbovinecoronavirus(BECV)strainLY138.Sequenceanalysisrevealed98.7%nucleotideand98.3%deducedaminoacididentitiesbetweentheSgenesofBRCV-G95andBECV-LY13

4、8withoutanydeletionsorinsertions.Nucleotidesubstitutionsweredistributedrandomlythroughoutthegene.FivemonoclonalantibodiesspecificfortheSproteindistinguishedBRCV-G95fromBECV-L9,butfailedtodifferentiateitfromBECV-LY138inWesternblotsunderdenaturedandnativeconditions.BRCV-G95inducedcytopathi

5、cchangesincellculturesthatweresimilartoBECV-LY138butdifferentfromBECV-L9.TheseresultssuggestthatstrainBRCV-G95ismorecloselyrelatedtothevirulentstrainBECV-LY138thantotheavirulent,cellculture-adaptedstrainBECV-L9.Bovinecoronavirus(BCV)causessevereenteritisofnewborncalves[3,11,12],anditisal

6、sorecognizedasanetiologicalfactorofrespiratorydiseaseofcalves[5,6,9,13,15].Comparativestudiesrevealedthatcoronavirusisolatesfromtheintestinalorrespiratorytractsofcalvesbothreplicatedinintestinalandupperrespiratorycellsofgnotobioticcalves[17,18].Serologicaltestsfailedtodistinguishbetweenb

7、ovinerespiratorycoronavirus(BRCV)andentero-pathogenicbovinecoronavirus(BECV).Aporcinerespiratorycoronavirus(PRCV)hadadeletionintheSgenewhencomparedwiththetransmissible422X.Zhangetal.gastroenteritisvirus.Thisdeletionwasconsideredmostlikelyresponsibleforthedifferencesintiss
