2、.In-vestigationintotheprevalenceofFCoVinexoticFelidaehasreliedprimarilyonserology.TheusefulnessofgeneticdetectionofFCoVusingreversetranscriptionandnestedpolymerasechainreaction(RT/nPCR)forviralscreeningwasinvestigated.Seventy-®vebiologicsamples,primarilyfeces,fromcaptivefeli

3、dsfrom11institutionsweretestedusingPCR.Serumsamplescollectedfromallbut12oftheseanimalsweretestedforantibodiestotypeIandtypeIIFCoVbyindirectimmuno¯uorescence.Twenty-fouranimalswerepositiveusingRT/nPCRforvirus.Twenty-nineanimalswereseropositivetotypeIand/ortypeIIFCoV.Fromserol

4、ogicdata,infectionwithavirusantigenicallyrelatedtoFCoVtypeIoccurredmostcommonly.Serologydidnotcorrelatewithvirussheddingbecause13animalswereseronegativetoFCoVtypeIandIIbutpositiveusingRT/nPCRforvirus.Conversely,20animalswereseropositivebutnegativeusingRT/nPCRforFCoV.Someofth

5、epop-ulationsinwhichviruswasdetectedhadexperiencedhealthproblems,includingfelineinfectiousperitonitis(FIP),necrotizingcolitis,andmildenteritis.InadditiontoitsroleinFIP,thisvirusmayplayaroleingastro-intestinaldiseasesofinfectedanimals.ThisstudydemonstratesthatFCoVisasigni®can

6、tinfectiousagentofcaptivefelidsbecauseoverhalfoftheanimalstestedwerepositivebyviralgeneticdetection,serology,orboth.Dependenceupononemethodfordetectionofinfectionisunreliable.Infectiousdiseasesarepotentiallydevastatingtowildlifefrom11zoologicinstitutionsintheUSAforFCoVgeneti

7、cconservation.Inparticular,largecarnivorepopulationsaredetection.SpeciesofFelidaetestedincludedcheetah,snowsusceptibletoseriousconsequencesbecausetheyarealreadyleopard,Africanleopard,serval,Bengaltiger,Siberiantiger,threatenedbyrestrictedranges,habitatdestruction,andover-mou
