2、culturalcompetencecanbedefinedfollowingFantini(2006)as“acomplexofabilitiesneededtoperformeffectivelyandappropriatelywheninteractingwithotherswhoarelinguisticallyandculturallydifferentfromoneself”(p.12,emphasisinoriginal).Throughouttheliterature,researc
3、hersandtheoreticiansusearangeofmoreorlessrelatedtermstodiscussanddescribeinterculturalcompetence,includinginterculturalcommunicativecompetence(ICC),transculturalcommunication,cross-culturaladaptation,andinterculturalsensitivity,amongothers(Fantini,2006
4、).Whatallofthesetermsattempttoaccountforistheabilitytostepbeyondone’sowncultureandfunctionwithotherindividualsfromlinguisticallyandculturallydiversebackgrounds.Collegeforeignlanguageandstudyabroadprogramsplayauniqueroleinofferingstudentstheopportunityt
5、odeveloptheirinterculturalcompetencies.Theacquisitionofsuchcompetenciesmaybeimportantnotonlyforindividualenrichmentandcommunicativeproficiencybutalsoforprovidingfutureeducators,professionals,andleaderswiththecapabilitiesnecessaryforpromotingsuccessfulc
6、ollaborationacrosscultures.Inthisreportwesummarizetheoryandresearchoninterculturalcompetence,payingparticularattentiontoexistingapproachesandtoolsforitsassessment.Wealsoreviewexamplesoftheassessmentofinterculturalcompetenceinthespecificcontextsofgenera
