3、TreasuryNotestoberepaidwithmoniesraisedforthepurposebyanAssessmentonLand.Itcost,inthecurrencyoftheday,£3,142.17.3,andwasintendedtoserveasaVice-RegalresidencefortheLieutenantGovernorsofthethenBritishcolonyofPrinceEdwardIsland.ThearchitecturaldesignofthehouseisGeorgian,wit
4、hechoesofthePalladiantradition,andwastheworkofIsaacSmith.ThewoodenbuildingwasconstructedbythearchitectinassociationwithHenrySmithandNathanWright,afirmoflocalbuilders.Themainstructureis95feetlongby65feetwidewithtwowingsattherearoftheresidencemeasuring28feetlongby25feetwid
5、e,underwhichwasplacedafullIslandsandstonefoundation,mostofwhichstillsupportstheresidence.Thesillsare15inchessquareandthefloorjoistsare4inchesby11inchesandarelaid18inchesfromcentertocenter.GovernmentHouseislocatedonaparceloflandsetasidebyGovernorEdmundFanningin1789asCrown
6、land,withthespecificstipulationthatitbeusedasthesiteforaresidencefortheLieutenantGovernor.Theoriginalparcel,knownasFanningBankorFanning’sBank,containedapproximately100acres,andincludedfarmlandfortheuseoftheincumbent.However,in1876,partoftheGovernmentHousepropertywasgiven
7、totheCityofCharlottetownandisnowknownasVictoriaPark.Theremainingparcelofapproximately10acreswasretainedforGovernmentHouseanditsgrounds,andthepropertyhasbeenknownmorerecentlyasFanningbank.Uponcompletionofthebuilding,theLieutenantGovernoroftheday,SirAretasWilliamYoung,beca
