4、vidualmutationsplayarelativelyminorrole.Instead,molecularevolutionisdeterminedbythevariancein tnesswithinthepopulation,de nedoverane ectivelyasexualsegmentofthegenome(alinkageblock").Weexploitthisinsensitivityinanewcoarse-grained"coalescentframework,whichapproximatesthee

5、ectsofmanyweaklyselectedmutationswithasmallernumberofstronglyselectedmutationswiththesamevariancein tness.Thisapproximationgeneratesaccurateandecientpredictionsforthegeneticdiversitythatcannotbesummarizedbyasimplereductionine ectivepopulationsize.However,theseresultssugges

6、tafundamentallimitonourabilitytore-solveindividualselectionpressuresfromcontemporarysequencedataalone,sinceawiderangeofparametersyieldnearlyidenticalpatternsofsequencevariability.Naturalselectionmaintainsexistingfunctionandpositiveselectionrespectively.Althoughinitiallyform
