2、aqualitativecomponentcanservemultiplerolesincausalanalyses,includingunderstandingtreatmentdeÞnition,conceptmeasurement,selectionintotreatment,causaleffectmechanisms,andeffectheterogeneity.Wealsodescribehowquantitativeandqualitativemethodologiescanbeandhavebeencombinedinstu
3、diesseekingtomakecausalclaims,highlightingsomeofthekeyresearchdesigndecisionsinintegratingqualitativeandquantitativemethodologies.Giventheabilityofqualitativeresearchtogreatlyenhancequantitativestudiesconcernedwithcausality,wearguethatmorecausalstudiesshouldincorporatemixe
4、dmethodsapproachesintotheirresearchdesigns.IntroductionInterestinanduseofmixedmethodsresearchdesignshasexplodedinthelasttwodecades,bothintraditionalsocialsciencedisciplineslikesociologyandpoliticalscienceandinappliedÞeldslikeeducation,nursing,publichealth,andsocialwork(Bry
5、man2006).Theresulthasbeenanaccumulationofstudiesandpracticalknowledgeaboutcombiningqualitativeandquantitativemethodsaswellasagrowingcottageindustryofmixedmethodshandbooks,textbooks,andreaders(e.g.,TashakkoriandTeddlie2003;CreswellandPlanoClark2007;PlanoClarkandCreswell2008
