2、uctfinancialtransactions.Almost60percentofAmericansdescribeidentitytheftasamajorworry.Thisisalmostidenticaltothepercentagewhoactuallybankonline.Somepeoplegotogreatlengthstoensurethattheyarenotexposedtoidentitytheft:Somebuyaspecialcomputerforonlinetransactions,someusetemporarycreditaccountnumbersfo
3、ronlinetransactions,somegosofarastonottransactonlineatall.Morethan50millionAmericansusesomeformofcredit-monitoringservicetoalerttheminthecaseofidentitytheft.Suchstepsaresometimestakenatgreatcost,reflectingarealsuspicionthatsomeoneisschemingtoobtaintheirinformation.Millionsofpeoplefallpreytoidentit
4、ythefteveryyear,andtheoveralllevelofdistrustforallthingsInternetmayseemjustified.Yetonlyabout10percentofidentitytheftoccursthroughsomeformofInternet-basedtransaction.Overwhelmingly,identitytheftoccursthroughmisplacedorerroneouslydeliveredpaperworkorlostwallets.Almosthalfofthosevictimizedbyidentity
5、thefthaveapriorpersonalrelationshipwiththepersonwhovictimizedthem.Inmanycases,afamilymemberhassuccessfullystolentheiridentityusingtheiraccesstoconfidentialfinancialrecords.Childrenhavestolenparent’sidentities,andparentshavestolenchildren’sidentities.However,withouttrustingourownfamily,familylifewou
6、ldbetransformedintosomethingquiteforeignandunpleasant.Fewcouldimaginelockingupwallets,keys,andothervaluableitemstopreventparentsorsiblingsfromstealing.Formost,theserelationshipsdefinetrust,andtheyconstitutesomeoftheonlypeoplewithwhomwecanbecompletelycandid.Evenbeyondourownfamily,amajorityofourecon
7、omicdecisionsdependontrust.Inmanycases,wemustrelyonotherstoprovideuswithinformationthatmaybetaintedbytheirownmotive.Forexample,givenourlackoftraininginthemedicalfield,wemustrelyonphysicianstodiagnoseourillnesses.Butsome
