3、utaboutwomen.Unfortunately,talkingexclusivelyaboutwomen,thoughIloveit,isboundtoupsetsome,ifnotall,intheaudience,soIreallyhavetotalkaboutbiophysics.Strivingforagoodwaytode¯nebiophysics,I¯nallyfoundagreatrevelation:when-everthereisaproblem,bureaucratsusuallycomplicateittosuch
4、adegreethatnobodywillthinktheproblemiscomprehensibleandthereforesolvable.So,whynotcomplicatetheterm¯rstandseeifIcouldgetawayfromgivingbiophysicsaclearde¯nition.Tomysurprise,whenIaddedchemistrytobiophysics,amazingchemistryproceeded,dustsbegantoprecipitate,andthesolutionbecam
5、eclear:biophysicalchemistrycanbede¯nedasphysicalchemistry,acoursetaughtin(nearly)everychemistrydepartment,pertinenttobiology.Atypicalphysicalchemistrycoursecoversthreesubjects:chemicalthermo-dynamics,quantumchemistry,andchemicalkinetics.Veryfewpeoplewilldisagreewiththisde¯n
6、itionofphysicalchemistry,soIcansimplyfollowitanddiscussinmybiophysi-calchemistrylecturesapplicationsofchemicalthermodynamics,quantumchemistry,andchemicalkineticsinbiology.Usuallyinquantumchemistrystudentslearnbasicquantummechanics,chemicalbondsandmolecularorbitals,spectrosc
7、opy,and,sometimes,grouptheory.Thesearesobasictobiologythatveryoftenoneimmediatelytalksaboutbondsandspectroscopictech-niqueswithouteverdiscussingtheprinciplesbehindthem.Ontheotherhand,computer-aidedstructuralanalysis,modeling,andsimulationhavebeendevelopedtosuchagreatdegreeo
