2、delforthestatisticsofcelldivisionisproposed.Themodelassumes:(1)thatgrowthatthecellularlevelisdeterministic;(2)thatthemeansizeofacellatdivisionisundercellularandenvironmentalcontrol;(3)thatthedistributionofsizesofcellsatdivisionhasasmallcoefficientofvariation,andis
3、independentofthesizeatpreviousdivisions;(4)thatthecelldividesnearlyintoequalhalves.Theobservedcoefficientofvariationofthelife-lengthdistributionf(7)resultsfromatwofoldsmallercoefficientofvariationinthedistributionofcellularmassatdivision,g(c).Themagnificationofthe
4、coefficientofvariationresultsfromthefactthatthemassvariableenterstwice,onceindeterminingthesizeofcellformedatdivision,and,secondly,indeterminingthesizeofthecellwhenitinturndivides.Intheexpressionfor7,thesesizesenterasthelogarithmoftheirratio.Thesemathematicalopera
5、tionscontributetotheincreasedcoefficientofvariationofthef(7)distributionovertheg(c)distribution.Theskewednatureofthef(7)distributionisattributabletoanumberofcauses.Wefeelthatanimportantsourceoftheskewnessisduetodeviationsfromequi-partitionofcellconstituentsatdivis
6、ion.Inthisrespectthepresentmodelisindisagreementwithpreviousmodelswhichpresumethattheskewnessresultsfromthestatisticsofasmallnumberofmoleculareventstakingplaceinsideeachcell.Theexperimentallyobservedpositivesister-sisterlife-lengthcorrelationandthenegativemother-d
7、aughterlife-lengthcorrelationareexplainedbythemodel.Deviationsfromthepredictedvaluesof+0.5and-0.5,respectivelymaybeexplainedinpartbydeviationfromequaldistributionofcellcontentsatdivision.Deviationsofthecorrelationsinexcessofthese,observedinsomecases,implytheexiste
